5 Social Skills Technology is Destroying
1. Eye contact
Too much of it is creepy, but not enough is even creepier. Being able to sustain eye contact well, and know when it’s appropriate, is a vital social tool. Good luck getting past an interview if you don’t know how to look people in the eyes. It’s just one more thing that looking at screens for more than 10 hours a day has taken away from people, the ability to know what to look at when holding down a conversation.
2. Phone skills
When I say phone skills, I don’t mean how fast you can text, or Instagram a picture of that lovely cake you just baked. I mean your ability to actually speak on the phone. In initial professional phone conversations, and emails, it’s important to introduce yourself, and be as detailed, yet concise as possible. Get straight to the point, and don’t leave anybody guessing.
3. Conversation
The art of conversation is one skill many members of Gen Y lack. Asking questions about others, actively listening, and being able to read other peoples physical social cues, are all part of being a skilled conversationalist. The constant compulsion to look at a screen, that some members of Gen Y are plagued with, does not give those that interact with them the impression that they are invested in the present conversation.
4. Spatial Awareness
We’ve all seen her, the girl at the grocery store, standing in the middle of the aisle, forcing everyone to labour around her, while she frantically texts or chats on her phone. Well, this kind of behaviour can be irritating at the office as well. The one member of the office who constantly leaves their chair out for you to run into, or leaves their stuff scattered around the break room, can get on the nerves of others.
5. Attention Span
Short attention spans affect so many aspects of young people’s everyday life. From an inability to maintain jobs for extended periods of time, to the inability to write congruent reports, this hashtag culture we currently live in, definitely has some downsides. It’s obvious when someone is bored, either with their work, in a meeting, or in a dialogue. Not being able to muster up some sustained interest and enthusiasm isn’t going to win you a seat at the table. Not everything worthwhile can be conveyed in 140 characters or less.

The disadvantages of social networking
Social Networking
Social networking is all about sharing. It has transformed the way we share our photos, thoughts, videos and more. It has opened up new ways of communicating with our friends and family that in the past would have required setting up our own radio, TV station or newspaper. As with email and the Web in general, sites such as Facebook and Twitter (together with the associated mobile apps) enable us to communicate more quickly, more easily and more often. Technology has made communicating with others so straightforward and natural that it is often necessary to try and limit the use of these platforms and tools to avoid overload
The Web
The Web is at the heart of many ways in which technology has affected communication. It enables us to instantly communicate across the world for the price of a broadband subscription, which has had a over the top impact on how we can keep in touch with family or do business with colleagues working remotely. While this has made it easier to make contact with others, it has also made it more difficult to switch off.
Mobile phones
Mobile phones and other mobile devices such as tablets have accentuated the impact of the Web. Not only are we accessible every time we sit down at a computer, we are now accessible from wherever we are. Our mobile phones enable us to communicate with hundreds or even thousands of contacts across a myriad of services and platforms with a few taps on the screen. It is no longer necessary to use face-to-face contact and speech to communicate – we can use short SMS messages, or leave a voicemail, or send a tweet from our phones.
Skype
Over the few years Skype has become one of the leading messaging programs. although it boasts a world of communication features that are enable you to contact anyone around the world.
Risk for Children
Over the years, online chatting has become a danger-zone for children. For example, Skype can be used to facilitate cyber bullying, especially if parents fail to monitor their children's activities. Additionally, like other online chat rooms, Skype creates opportunities for adults to prey on children. Even though the program can be used for wonderful experiences such as connecting with family and friends over video chats, these experiences can turn ugly in the blink of an eye if the wrong people are on a child's friend list.
Security
With it's popularity, Skype is a target for hackers and attackers looking for ways to steal personal information such as passwords. Though developers encrypt Skype calls, especially with newer versions, the messaging program is still susceptible to being hacked, especially if the proper security measures aren't taken by the user. Hackers are always looking for new ways to break passwords and access personal information; so, as a user, a few simple measures, such as befriending people you know and only exchanging files with people you're familiar with, decreases the chances of unauthorized intrusions that could diminish privacy and security.
what are the disadvantages of IM
There are of course disadvantages of instant messaging. While the real time response is great, IMs do take away the face to face, personal experience that people have when they are speaking to someone in person. You can't really get a very good emotional bead on someone through IM nor are you sure of who you are talking to through IM, which can be dangerous if you aren't careful. Company environment, there will be potential for misuse. People in workplaces may use the IMs during work time to chat with friends and waste time or even bring the possible virus from outside.
There are also some security risks like the content of the instant message may be intercepted. As a result the sensitive data like customer list, sales report may be revealed on the internet.
People may forget there spelling and grammar when they write or read something on the internet or also texting someone via a phone. This may happen because people now days spend a lot of time on computers and get used to the spell check that is on the computer. people get used to the slang that is used in texting or on social network. This effects student that take exams, this shows they may use slang in the exam for example: u instead of you. This is slang, people depend on slang instead of English.
